Megascans in Renderman 22
Megascans from Quixel have become an important resource when creating material based texturing and lookdev. So what is Megascans you might ask? Megascan is texture sets with tiled images all in sync. They are captured and processed so you can mix and match between materials with comfort. Quixel also have a mixer app where you can create your own personal texture set from the library for even more variation. In a previous post I looked at how I use megascans in Mari. This time I want to take a look at how to use it straight in to Renderman 22.
“To use the Mari 4 megascans texture sets tab you will need materials and Quixel is the first to be supported”
pxrRound cube and Multitexture nodes
When texturing inside Mari I use a node called TriPLanar projection to seamlessly project the textures from all directions onto the model. In Renderman we have a similar node and its called Roundcube. It’s basically a Manifold you connect to a multi texture node. You can now control the repetitions of the textures in the multi texture node. What I do is create a multi texture node for each texture so that they are all connected to the same Round Cube manifold. If I change one parameter it will change for all textures at once.
Let’s take a look inside Maya and how its all connected
As you can see there is a lot of flexibility when creating environments and similar effects. The upside of having the textures live in this way is that you can easily change resolution on the fly. Previously if f you used textures from Mari you had to re export the textures and bring it back. Now, it’s also easier to maintain resolution for close up shots.
